The second Captain in 1895. Reputedly England's greatest all-round sportsman

 

David Lloyd George

Played at Rye - "a keen but indifferent golfer", was Prime Minister from 1916-1922

Bernard Darwin

The great golf writer. Captain in 1906 and again fifty years later in 1956. Sang the praises of Rye whenever possible.

 

The Rt. Hon. A.J. Balfour

Captain in 1909. "He helped to make golf a respectable weekend occupation", was Prime Minister from 1902-1905

C.J.H. Tolley

Captain in 1928. winner of the Putter in 1938. Twice French Open Champion. Twice Amateur Champion

 

R.H. Wethered

Tied in Putter final in 1926. All square at 24th when it became too dark to continue

 

G.H. Micklem

Captain in 1953. Played in Putter 36 times

 

 

L.G. Crawley

Won Putter before and after WW2. Lived in Chief Coastguards House behind 3rd green

 

Denis Vidler

Captain 1965, Trustee 1967-1989, President 1990-1992. Author of the Club's history

 

Hon. Oliver Lyttleton, DSO.MC

Captain 1926. President 1945-1951. Steered the Club through difficult times after WW2.

Brigadier R.P. Scott, DSO

A memorable and formidable Secretary 1948 - 1961

Mr & Mrs A. Oak

Much-loved Steward and Cook who joined the Club in 1932 and stayed for 27 years. Oak had previously served on the clubhouse staff as a boy in 1912.
